For the restless mind it offers solace. For the sick, it is a boon. For the common man it is the fashion of the day to keep him fit and handsome, some use it for developing memory, intelligence and creativity. With its multifold advantages it is becoming a part of education. Promotion of positive health is being nurtured by many who do not want to be the victims of modern ailment. Yoga is playing a vital role in this aspect in the new millennium.
The science of yoga begins to work on the outermost aspect of the personality, the physical body, which for most people is a practical and familiar starting point. When imbalance is experienced at this level, the organs, muscles and nerves no longer function in harmony: rather they act in opposition to each other. For instance, the endocrine system might become irregular and the efficiency of the nervous system decrease to such an extent that a disease will manifest. Yoga aims at bringing the different bodily functions into perfect coordination so that they work for the good of the whole body.
The term yoga has its verbal root as Yuj in sanskrit. Yuj means joining, "Yujyate anena iti yogah". Yoga is that which joins. What are the entities that are joined? In the traditional terminology it is the joining of the individual self, Jivatma with the universal self, Paramatma. It is an expansion of the narrow constricted egoistic personality to an all pervasive, eternal and blissful state of REALITY.
There are many branches of yoga: raja, hatha, jnana, karma, bhakti, mantra, kundalini and laya, to name but a few and many texts explain them in details, Each individual needs to find those yogas most suited to his or her particular personality and need.
